GABRIEL TAKES MARY BY SURPRISE
We have chosen this painting by John William Waterhouse for our illustration of the Annunciation because it shows Mary totally bewildered by what Gabriel has told her, as surely she must have been. Today, March 25th, we celebrate the feast.
Um, sorry to pop up on here again..! Thank you for posting this lovely painting. I wasn't familiar with it but I love that it shows the young Mary's bewilderment; the enormity of her role and how wonderfully strong her faith must have been. She was little more than a child. There are two paintings, both called The Annunciation, which a lot of your regulars may be familiar with; by John Collier and by Rossetti. Initially, they appear quite different from each other. The former is still quite stylised but very contemporary. Both of them depict Mary's youth and innocence and how overwhelmed she must have been.
